The University of California, Berkeley is a public land grant research university in Berkeley, California. Founded in 1868 as the University of California, it is the first land-grant university in the state and the first campus of the University of California system.
Its 14 colleges and schools offer more than 350 degree programs and enroll about 31,000 undergraduate and 12,000 graduate students.
Berkeley is ranked among the best universities in the world by major educational publications. Berkeley hosts many of the leading research institutes, including the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and the Space Science Laboratory.
She established and maintains close relationships with three national laboratories in Berkeley, Livermore, and Los Alamos, and has played a prominent role in many scientific developments, from the Manhattan Project and the discovery of 16 chemical elements to breakthroughs in computer science and genomics.
Berkeley athletic teams, competing as the California Golden Bears primarily in the Pac-12 Conference, have won 107 national championships, and their students and alumni have won 223 Olympic medals (including 121 gold).
