The SBW Berlin scholarship program offers a unique opportunity for international students to pursue their academic goals while making a meaningful social impact. This comprehensive scholarship supports bachelor’s and master’s degree programs at universities in  Berlin and Potsdam, with a special focus on students committed to developing social or non-profit projects in their home countries.

SBW Berlin Scholarship Benefits

The scholarship package includes:

  • Furnished accommodation in shared student housing at Rudower Str. 67, Berlin
  • Monthly living allowance of 480 EUR
  • Full tuition fee coverage
  • Travel contribution for initial journey to Berlin and return journey after completion (up to 500 EUR within Europe, 1,000 EUR outside Europe)

Basic Requirements

  • Age: 18-30 years
  • International students from countries requiring development assistance (particularly from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America)
  • Valid student visa or residence permit for study purposes in Germany
  • No permanent stay in Germany exceeding 18 months before application
  • No first-degree family members residing permanently in Germany

Academic Requirements

  • Minimum grade point average equivalent to 2.0 on the German grading scale
  • University entrance qualification
  • For ongoing students: enrolled in first, second, or third semester maximum
  • For master’s applicants: applying shortly before or after obtaining bachelor’s degree

Social Engagement

  • Proven professional or volunteer experience in the non-profit sector
  • Active collaboration with a non-profit organization in home country
  • Commitment to implementing social projects

SBW Berlin Scholarship Application Process

Step 1: Initial Recommendation

  • Obtain a letter of recommendation from a non-profit organization or social institution

Step 2: Required Documents

  • Completed application form (provided after recommendation review)
  • Project description (2-5 pages)
  • University entrance qualification

Step 3: Selection Process

Important Considerations

Duration and Renewal

Post-Graduation Requirements

Additional Notes

  • Cannot be combined with other scholarships (except BAföG)
  • Part-time jobs generally not permitted

  • Early termination possible for academic underperformance or project neglect
